I drew this in May:

I’m proud to say that the software that I am (as of this weekend) using to manage DC Tech Events is quite close to the EVENTGRINDER concept— there are a few more types of content I want to be able to pull in, and I’m sure there are plenty of warts that will only appear after I use it for a few weeks. For the time being, I’m actually running the application from my desktop— but some new possibilities will open up once I get it living on a web server.
One of the biggest changes is that I realized I don’t have to run my own event database— I can “outsource” that to Google, and get a ton of free features in return— like atom and ical feeds, and an embeddable version of the calendar for the people who’ve been asking me to create a widget.
I still have to write the public-facing front end, but in the meantime I’ve just pasted the Google widget onto the front page of dctechevents.com. I also haven’t worked out exactly how I want to extract the calendar data into the weekly newsletter, but I still have 13+ hours before I have to publish that ;)
