DC Tech Events Weekly for March 17th: Disinfect

It’s Sunshine Week

Sunshine Week is a national initiative to open a dialogue about the importance of open government and freedom of information. Participants include print, broadcast and online news media, civic groups, libraries, non-profits, schools and others interested in the public’s right to know.

I’d like to highlight (and hope to attend) two Sunshine-related events:  On 3/19 is Government Secrecy: Censoring Your Right to Know. Most relevent to the Tech Events reader is the second part of that event:

We will be visiting and talking with creators of websites that help the public avoid having to file official requests or go to offices and meetings to learn what our government is doing: Bill Allison (Sunlight Foundation), Sheila Krumholz (Center for Responsive Politics/OpenSecrets.org), David Moore (OpenCongress.org), Sean Moulton (FedSpending.org), and Daniel X. O’Neil (EveryBlock); Greg Elin of Sunlight Labs will moderate. These sites make hard-to-find government information — federal, state and local — easy for the public to find and use and may inspire you to do likewise. A quick report will be given, as well, on an initiative to develop a 21st Century Right-to-Know agenda and recommendations for the next President and Congress.

The next day, Larry Lessig will be at the press club talking about the "beta" version of his Change Congress project.

Sure, you read this every week, but have you really integrated DC Tech Events into your life? Learn how!

Here’s this weeks calendar— more information on the events is available at dctechevents.com. Featured jobs from JobMatchBox follow. The Social Matchbox craziness returns March 31st.

DC Tech Events Weekly for March 10th 2008: Annapolis!

Yeah, the A-List is at SXSW, but there’s some cool stuff happening for the people still in DC.

Of course, if you’re reading this from Austin, you’ve got FOUR chances to check out Kid Beyond’s crazy beat-boxing + live looping act, which I’ve only seen on the youtubes. Go.

I won’t pretend I’ve read up on and have a fully informed opinion on Maryland’s "tech tax" and those who are fighting it, but Mitch and crew are holding a rally at the State House on Wednesday.

Oh, there’s a nifty new thing on Ross Notes.

Great companies like emPivot, WhyGoSolo, Rosetta Stone, Razoo, Positive Energy, and Viget Labs are hiring. Robert also has details about the next SocialMatchbox event, which is going down on March 31st.

The complete calendar and subscription options are at dctechevents.com.
