5.3

A twitter update from Shashi led to an article on James Hong, creator of (among other things) Hot Or Not, where at some point between 2000 and 2003 I uploaded a photo of myself, probably obsessed over it for a few weeks, and then promptly forgot about it.

So I haven’t looked at this thing in 5 years or more, and was suddenly curious about what my rating might be.

The answer? Slightly above average.

Because this is theoretically a technology blog, I’ll note that the shirt I’m wearing in that picture came from Ximian.

Hackers, Tinkerers, Makers, and Dorkbot-er's: Your New Home is Here

This weekend is a pre-Grand Opening "parts party" for HACDC:

"HacDC is a non-profit organization and space dedicated to technical, artistic and social collaboration. We are technologists, tinkerers, crafters and codemonkeys who call DC home. We collaborate across disciplines for the benefit of cultural, charitable and scientific causes. We create, learn and teach as a group, inviting our neighbors around the block and around the world to join us!"

Those sentiments are expanded a bit in their mission statement.

What follows is a cut-and-paste from the event notice:

Come to our first public event this Sunday

Sunday April 27!

2:00 PM to 10:00 PM (or possibly later!)

1525 Newton St NW, (located within the St Stephen & Incarnation Church

Cost:    FREE, but please bring a tool/furniture/electronic scrap to donate!

Why:    We started HacDC to give DC a place to make, build, disassemble, code, learn and do all the awesome things you can do in a “hacker space”.  Like nycresistor.com in New York and thehacktory.org in Philly, DC now has its own collaboration and creative space, HacDC!  However, we can’t do it without your support.  We rely on you!

How:  Bring something you think our space would need:

  • Tools!  (Power tools, electronic test equipment, soldering irons, etc.)
  • Furniture (especially folding chairs and shelving!)
  • Electronics (working and non-working things we can disassemble!)
  • Food and Beverages (to keep us going while we work on projects!)

Enjoy the party!  Dissassemble something!  Learn how to pick and secure your own locks!  Throw a demo of your own making.

We’re also looking for charter members, people who are dedicated to building a stronger DIY/Hacker community in DC.  We are a non-profit DC organization seeking 501(c)(3) status, and all of our work goes directly back into the community through educational, scientific and cultural channels.

Questions?  Comments?  Curious to know if we really want that old copy machine that’s been lying around in your house for five years (YES) E-mail info@hacdc.org
